چکیده

The concept of dynamical compensation has been recently introduced to describe the ability of a biological system to keep its output dynamics unchanged in the face of varying parameters. However, the original definition of dynamical compensation amounts to lack of structural identifiability. This is relevant if model parameters need to be estimated, as is often the case in biological modelling. Care should we taken when using an unidentifiable model to extract biological insight: the estimated values of structurally unidentifiable parameters are meaningless, and model predictions about unmeasured state variables can be wrong. Taking this into account, we explore alternative definitions of dynamical compensation that do not necessarily imply structural unidentifiability. Accordingly, we show different ways in which a model can be made identifiable while exhibiting dynamical compensation. Our analyses enable the use of the new concept of dynamical compensation in the context of parameter identification, and reconcile it with the desirable property of structural identifiability.

Dynamical compensation in biological systems as a particular case of structural non-identifiability

Dynamical compensation (DC) has been recently defined as the ability of a biological system to keep its output dynamics unchanged in the face of varying parameters. This concept is purported to describe a design principle that provides robustness to physiological circuits. Here we note the similitude between DC and Structural Identifiability (SI), and we argue that the former can be explained i...

Identifiability of Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium Models with Covariance Restrictions

This article is concerned with identification problem of parameters of Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium Models with emphasis on structural constraints, so that the number of observable variables is equal to the number of exogenous variables. We derived a set of identifiability conditions and suggested a procedure for a thorough analysis of identification at each point in the parameters sp...

Identifiability of Inertia with Partial

In dynamical systems models from biology to power systems, structural identifiability 4 is an essential step for understanding, probing, and even controlling the dynamical system. When the 5 system input is controllable, structural identifiability can be verified by computing well-established, 6 straightforward conditions. In many applications, however, the system input is stochastic, and these...

Structural Identifiability of Dynamic Systems Biology Models

A powerful way of gaining insight into biological systems is by creating a nonlinear differential equation model, which usually contains many unknown parameters. Such a model is called structurally identifiable if it is possible to determine the values of its parameters from measurements of the model outputs. Structural identifiability is a prerequisite for parameter estimation, and should be a...

Structural Properties of Dynamic Systems Biology Models: Identifiability, Reachability, and Initial Conditions

Dynamic modelling is a powerful tool for studying biological networks. Reachability (controllability), observability, and structural identifiability are classical system-theoretic properties of dynamical models. A model is structurally identifiable if the values of its parameters can in principle be determined from observations of its outputs. If model parameters are considered as constant stat...
